The Dabaree Concept

What is Dabaree?

CGWE leverages Dabaree—a traditional economic practice based upon principles of reciprocity—to save the lives of women and children in Ethiopia’s Oromia region .

Without intervention, women are unable to earn a sustainable, living wage—giving way to intergenerational cycles of abuse, poverty, and disenfranchisement.

When women and their families are granted their heifer cow and receive animal caretaking instruction, their lives change dramatically.

  • Women can more safely work near home and tend to their young children.
  • A cow’s milk feeds the family and is sold in local markets, allowing older children to attend school rather than working.
  • The first-born heifer calf is granted to another family.
  • With greater economic and personal security women achieve increased self-esteem and invest in their families and villages, improving the quality of life for all.

With the support of our generous community, CGWE also works with local leaders to impact entire villages by providing the following:

  • Critical health, hygiene, and sanitation education and supplies
  • Advocacy against female genital mutilation
  • Clean water wells and veterinary clinics
  • Support for local schools

Together, we are breaking the intergenerational cycles of violence and economic disempowerment for women and children in Oromia, Ethiopia.
